Op-Ed: UAE and the Palestinian Cause

ABU DHABI, August 13, 2020 — Since its inception, the UAE has put the Palestinian question at the forefront of its priorities and as a central cause for the Arab nation. This was derived from the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and supported by the wise leadership, which has since made every effort to defend values such as justice and peace. The announcement today on the full normalisation of UAE-Israeli relations, as described in the Joint Declaration of the United States, the United Arab Emirates and the State of Israel, is a step towards strengthening peace in the Middle East. The UAE’s role in the Palestinian cause is still effective and obvious at all times and at all times, and today the joint statement stresses that Israel will stop the palestinian territories annexation plan outlined in President Trump’s vision for peace. Dr Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, felt that further annexation of Palestinian territories would have dashed any hopes for peace in the region. When the UAE made this decision, it did not turn back, but looked forward and toward the future of the region in general, which has suffered greatly from unrest and wars. The UAE has been and is the most important advocate of security and peace values in the Middle East in general and in Palestine in particular.

In parallel with this approach, the Emirates’ move towards the Arab Peace Initiative, which aims to create an independent Palestinian state and to intensify international and regional efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions, the Arab peace initiative and the Madrid principles, is committed. In view of these developments, Dr Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash said the UAE called for a return to direct negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians as the only parties capable of achieving a lasting and sustainable solution to the conflict. The joint declaration underlined that the two parties will continue their efforts in this regard to find a just, comprehensive and lasting solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
