The UAE consolidated second place with a strong 3-1 victory over Thailand in Group G of their Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Monday night at the Zabeel Stadium in Dubai. Caio Canedo gave the hosts the perfect start when he found the back of the net 14 minutes on the clock. Bert van Marwijk’s team continued to push the visitors back as they searched for an important second goal before the break. And they were rewarded when Fabio Lima got his head at the end of a cross from Bandar Al Ahbabi and defeated goalkeeper Siwarak Tedsungnoen on the nearest post 10 minutes ahead of time. Thailand, however, roared again in the second half and pulled back a goal after 53 minutes when Suphanat Mueanta’s clever turn and finish caused UAE goalkeeper and captain Ali Khaseif to take root.
The match continued to swing from end to end, with both sides close, including a great chance for Ali Mabkhout, the UAE striker, but his effort found the sideline. Mohammad Juma had a chance to take the lead on 90 minutes into the game, but his shot hit the post. Unsurprisingly, the confident substitute made the score 3-1 and secured the points deep into injury time, and the fans started partying in the stands. Group G leaders, Vietnam, beat Indonesia 4-0 at Al Maktoum Stadium in Dubai – all remaining matches in the group are played in the UAE due to the coronavirus pandemic.
